ARTIST STATEMENT
Illuminating invisible narratives has been Araba Ankuma’s principal motivation since finalizing her thesis in 2017 at the University of Pennsylvania. In the last decade, her affinity for documentary photography created a means through which to refine her storytelling abilities. With various opportunities to travel, her camera became her companion—a means of shedding light on humanity’s unique and varied perspectives.
Then came the year 2020.
These works mark a turning point in both process and form. In this new sustainable practice, Ankuma utilizes found physical materials to explore concepts of visual abstraction and synthesis. Each piece is a study in communication, snapshots of a year spent both learning and forming an imaginative new language.
The JUST ENOUGH collection reflects Ankuma’s solo journey through the emotional uproar that was 2020. Isolated from the outside world, she forced herself instead to seek from within.
To find her innate value and self-worth.
To understand that as an artist and as a human being, she is, we are,
JUST ENOUGH.
