Havana, Cuba
2017

In Touched, Ankuma uses her body to interact and communicate with the city of Havana.

As travelors and visitors in new places, we are often attracted to the appealing exterior of the surface. During a 2-week stay in Cuba as part of the Howard & Patricia Silverstein Documentary Photography Abroad Award, Ankuma confronts her own identity as it fits into this new textural and cultural space. Recognizing her role as a foreign storyteller, she demonstrates how the act of travel is in itself a reciprocal act. One that leaves a mark on both the visitor and the spaces that receive them.

In over 350 scenes, Ankuma places her own hand as subject, capturing the fabric of Havana today in this collection of unique “portraits.”
