Havana, Cuba

In Touched, I use my body as subject and object throughout the city of Havana, Cuba.

As travelors and visitors in new places, we are often attracted to the appealing exterior of the surface. During a 2-week stay in Cuba as part of the Howard & Patricia Silverstein Documentary Photography Abroad Award, I confronted my own identity as it fit into this illuminated textural and cultural space. Recognizing my role as a foreign storyteller, I sought to demonstrates how the act of travel is in itself a reciprocal act. One that leaves a mark on both the visitor and the spaces that receive them.

In over 350 scenes, I place my own hand as subject, capturing the fabric of Havana today in this collection of unique “portraits.”

Prints commissioned by Fogarty Finger design studio.
